Jewelry for a Teenager

Monday, April 19, 2010

Its can be a challenge to shop for a teenage girl’s jewelry. In fact, many young girls won’t wear jewelry that they think is tacky or ugly. But it is possible to find jewelry that will appeal to a teenager’s varying tastes. Turquoise earrings are a great choice for teen girls because they are beautiful and graceful in appearance.

Girls will also appreciate the shiny, blue stone against the plain silver backdrop of the earrings. Of course, make sure that the teen has their ears pierced before buying the earrings. The more thought you put into the gift, the harder it will be for her to refuse it.

In my search for additional ideas for something to spark your interest,  I found something that was not only informative but very enjoyable to read about.  See if you agree with me.

According to one of the sites I visited today,  I learned that turquoise has been named the color of the year by Pantone, Inc.  Turquoise colors are making their way on the catwalks as well as fashion shows.  Young and old alike are beginning to look to the cool, refreshing colors of turquoise for the upcoming summer.  When one sees turquoise you can easily conjure up mental pictures of cool sparking pools and warm sunny days or maybe your upcoming summer holiday.  Now that the fashion world is recognizing the popularity of the turquoise colors, you can also enjoy the  magic of your turquoise necklaces and other southwestern inspired turquoise jewelry.  Mother Nature has worked her magic to give us a most beautiful gemstone.  Now you can look forward to your special summer days.

I have a request to make of the readers of these blog pages.  In order to provide the type of service that will be of benefit to you,  I need your suggestions.

I have a rather extensive library available relating to the history of turquoise and the caring for turquoise , as well as to its proper storage.  I don’t want to be too  repetitious.  Turquoise  jewelry has always been fascinating to me and I am always on the alert for anything new and interesting.  The turquoise earrings I bought my wife last month are the same as the photo shown above.  She wears them  quite  frequently  because she enjoys  them so much.  My wife is a beautiful blond blue-eyed lady and the turquoise earrings really look terrific on her.  I am already thinking of the next piece of jewelry I am going to surprise her with.

If you have any subjects  or questions that you think the readers would enjoy then would you please share them with us?

More History of Turquoise

I really enjoy researching the history of turquoise.  It seems every time I come upon a new source of information I find out something a little different and new.  I hope  you will find these little tidbits of news interesting also.

As you know the Oriental peoples for many thousands of years have prized jade as their favorite gemstone;  however, turquoise is ranked as their 2nd favorite  choice.  The Middle Eastern cultures have used turquoise for thousands of years also.  The turquoise mined and enjoyed  throughout the European and Middle Eastern countries in  the earlier years  most likely came from mines in the Sinai Peninsula or Iran although there was mining being done in other locations.  Each source of historical information has a somewhat different slant as to the true history of turquoise.  As you purchase and wear your turquoise pendants or necklaces or earrings, ponder for a moment and consider the beautiful stone or stones you will be displaying.  I am hoping to gather some information on the use of turquoise in the fashion world.  It seems to be making a comeback.

Updates in Care of Turquoise

New information is now available for the proper caring for your turquoise jewelry that I would like to share with you.  I feel you need all the facts to properly care for your investment.

We have already discussed some of these ways to care for your jewelry.  Do not wear your turquoise jewelry when washing dishes, or any other cleaning or household chores.  Lotions and perfumes will also damage the turquoise stones. Never use any of the ultrasonic jewelry cleaners to clean your turquoise.  Avoid wearing turquoise in during swimming or using hot tubs because the chemicals in the water will damage the stones.  Avoid wearing your turquoise jewelry in the shower or bathing as the soaps can damage the stones.   If you will be extra careful to use the recommended  jeweler’s cleaning cloth or  warm water (preferably filtered) and a soft bristle brush, you will find your favorite turquoise pendant or earrings will be beautiful for years to come. Don’t forget that your body’s own ph balance can also affect the stones.  As more information becomes available I will pass it on to you.

Not Knowing is Expensive

This will be just a reminder of the subject we covered earlier and I feel it important enough to say it again.  I know would agree with me if this had ever happened to you.

When it comes to storing or protecting your turquoise necklaces, earrings or pendants, I hope you don’t have happen to you as what happened to my sister back east.   I was telling here of the proper handling and storage of turquoise and she mentioned had several pieces in her jewelry box.  Later, she called me and said that two of the pieces of turquoise jewelry were, in fact, slightly scratched.  I sent her a copy of the instructions I had published earlier so she could protect the other undamaged  pieces of turquoise jewelry she has.  She said she was going to take the damaged pieces to her jeweler and see if they could be repaired.  She also said  she is going to put the other pieces she has in separate velvet bags (plastic bags will work just fine).

Caring for your Jewelry

I thought it might be time to refresh your memory about the danger of improper cleaning techniques of turquoise and sterling silver jewelry.   If you use the wrong technique or product you will be in for a very unpleasant surprise.

If you will go back and read some of the previous blogs it will help as a reminder.  The last thing you want to do is to improperly clean and maintain your jewelry.  There are several methods to cleaning  turquoise.  I’ll just touch on only one method for now.  You can use a soft cleaning jeweler’s cloth – dampen the cloth and rub the stone lightly or you can use a soft brush and warm water to gently remove surface soiling.  The sterling silver mountings can be cleaned using a paste of baking soda and warm water and an old soft toothbrush and use extreme care to keep the paste off the stones.  If paste does get on the turquoise stones, wipe it off as soon as possible to avoid damage to the surface of the stone.  Remember that very special attention is needed to properly preserve your turquoise earrings, pendants or any other items you happen to have.

Turquoise Gems

Turquoise (the robin’s egg blue gemstone that was worn by rulers and kings) is probably the oldest of gemstones.  Its color was so dominating that the mere name of turquoise  was used to describe any color that it seemed to resemble it, such as , water or sky.

Further research has shown that turquoise has been used widely by the Native American tribes as well as most of the ancient Mexican tribes as far back as 200 – 250 B.C.

Ladies, when you wear your turquoise pendants or other Southwestern jewelry you just might sense the feeling of royalty.  Please use caution when wearing your jewelry that you might prepare yourself  to enjoy the unique qualities of turquoise and that is sometimes  felt by the wearer.  Rest assured that when you wear the beautiful turquoise stones you will feel like royalty and your appearance will be enhanced and be noticed by those around you.

A Proud Indian Tradition

Indians of the American Southwest were relatively unique in that they did not need to migrate in search of food. As a result, the Hopi, Navajo, Pueblo and other local tribes had time to create elaborate artwork from the comfort of their settlements. Various southwestern tribes churned out intricate dolls, woven blankets, detailed pottery and, of course, beautiful jewelry. This jewelry was designed in a distinctive style.

The silver-rich Southwest provided Indians with plenty of raw material to craft vibrant designs. Southwestern silver jewelry is particularly well-known for combining silver outlays with precious stones such as turquoise and topaz. Many Southwest Indians continue to create jewelry to this day, perfecting the techniques that their ancestors introduced.

I was reading some of the articles on the history of  turquoise and thought you readers might find the information that I found interesting.  I am finding that the history of turquoise is much greater and more wide- ranging than I had thought.

Turquoise’s use includes its use as a healing for ailments such as headaches, insect bites, stomach problems, fever and eye problems.  Turquoise is called a “harmonizing” stone and was carried around by the individual to help alleviate nervousness.  It was also believed to help with problem solving.  Turquoise helps to cope with stress and has  even helped  promote friendship.  So now when you  wear your turquoise pendants,  turquoise bracelets or even your turquoise necklace with its sterling silver chain and maybe, just maybe, you will notice a change in the way you feel or even think about a situation or a person.  Your life may take on a brand new meaning.
