A Reminder When Cleaning Turquoise Jewlery

I hope some of the suggestions I have shared with you will prove effective.  I feel that I need to emphasize again the necessity for the proper handling of the cleaning process.

I cannot stress too strongly that any cleaning agent that will clean sterling silver  will be harmful to the turquoise stone itself.  Proper handling of the cleaning process is extremely important.  Once the turqoise stone is damaged,  the stone will probably never be the same.  Research  the internet to find the different techniques that you can use.  Please remember proper handling will pay big dividends later.  A beautiful piece of turquoise jewelry can be passed on to future generations.

Some individuals use a paste of baking soda and warm water and an old soft toothbrush to clean the silver mountings.  This must be done with extreme care.

Brush the soda/water micxture on the silver mountings.  If  paste gets on the stone itself  – please remove the paste as soon as possible to avoid damage to the stone.  Use a clean soft white cloth to remove the paste, then rinse the jewelry under hot water and carefully dry your Turquoise Jewelry with a clean white cloth before storing the jewelry.

With this blog I will cover just the Sterling Silver cleaning.  The information for the best cleaning the sterling silver with a Silver Polishing Cloth.

If your cleaning cloth has chemicals or cleaning agents in it – you must not let the cloth come in contact with the stones themselves.  Damage to the stone will result if the chemicals or cleaning agents contact the stone.  I cannot stress enough how soft the Turquoise Jewelry – both the stone and the silver really is and easily damage can happen.

This is the first of the instructions I have found.  You may want until the entire series has been published before deciding which method you care to use.  Please be careful when cleaning and handling your turquoise jewelry as it can be damaged so easily.

To clean the turquoise stone, take an old soft toothbrush,  gently scrub the stone using the toothbrush dipped in warm water. Never use any soap or cleaners to clean the turquoise stones as this will damage the stones.   I will cover the cleaning of the sterling silver mountings in the next blog.

The information available relative to the cleaning of Sterling and Turquoise Jewelry is too long for a single blog page so I was advised to have a series of articles on this subject.  It seems there are different ideas and techniques to perform the cleaning of your jewelry.

I’ll provide the information I have been able to assemble.  My sources are rather varied.  I will endeavor to make the instructions as understandable and clear as possible and I will begin the series with my next blog.  See you there!

Storage of Turquoise Jewelry

The stone in your turquoise jewelry is considered a soft stone which can easily scratched and damaged.  Special attention is needed to protect your special turquoise jewelry.

Proper storage is easy to do.   It is suggested that you wrap each piece of your jewelry in a piece of  tissue paper before placing it in a small plastic zippered bag or a velvet bag. This may not seem necessary but it is absolutely essential if you wish to prevent damage to your jewelry.  Remember to be very careful in your handling, wearing, cleaning and storing of your turquoise jewelry.

Test Drive Your Jewelry

There are two essential things to consider when purchasing jewelry. Those two factors are looks and comfort. People, however, tend to only focus on the looks. After all, it’s obvious that if you don’t like the way jewelry looks, it will sit unused in your jewelry box. But not as many people take into account the comfort factor. Uncomfortable jewelry is just as likely as unattractive jewelry to collect dust on your dresser. With this in mind, always make sure your jewelry fits comfortably and that you’re able to do everything you need to do comfortably as well.

One of the more tricky pieces of jewelry to fit is the bracelet. Especially today, when chunky bracelets are very much en vogue, make sure you always try on before you purchase. Whether you’re looking at turquoise bracelets or a bracelet strung with thick beads, made sure the weight of the bracelet feels okay on your wrist. Make sure it doesn’t bang or hit your desk while you’re trying to type at work. Make sure it isn’t too snug or too loose. Consider all these factors before purchasing. Otherwise, it could be just another bracelet sitting in your overstuffed and underutilized jewelry box.

Fashion or Fad?

Often we ask ourselves if our clothes or jewelry is  fad or fashion.  The human being is a social individual and will try to fit in his particular societal group.

It is always the choice of the individual that will determine when a special piece of clothing or jewelry is especially important to him or her.  Jewelry available today is particularly special.  The selection is very large and the range of prices offer everyone an opportunity to acquire something he or she would like to have and enjoy.

Turquoise jewelry I am happy to say is an item of jewelry that is not only appealing to a wide range of people, and is affordable to just about everyone.

Many individuals purchase turquoise jewelry to use and enjoy now and also be able to pass the special pieces  of jewelry on to another generation.

The storage and handling of your turquoise jewelry will be discussed in a future blog.

Characteristics of Southwest Jewelry

If you’re interested in the bold and distinct look of southwestern jewelry, it’s very likely that you’re enamored with turquoise. This is because turquoise is one of the most commonly used elements in southwestern sterling silver jewelry. Depending on the type of jewelry you purchase, that silver can either be stamped with designs or left unstamped and polished to a high sheen.

The turquoise itself is often the distinctive and famous bright blue color, or it can also appear in red variants. Coral is another common element used in this southwest jewelry. When purchasing, you can either get it straight from the source, in which case the jewelers will actually be Native Americans of the southwest region, or you can purchase jewelry that is simply made in the southwestern style.

Turquoise Jewelry

The turquoise stone’s history is relatively unknown.  Even though turquoise stones were used by ancient peoples around the world, it wasn’t until the 14th century that its importance as an ornamental stone became important.

It seems that each society or group of people had their own way to utilize the turquoise stone.  For example, the Middle Eastern society seemed to favor the turquoise bracelet as well as necklaces.  The distinctive silver jewelry used in conjunction with the turquoise stones is thought to have been produced by the Navajo and other Southwestern American tribes probably around the latter part of the 1800′s.
